India's population is over 100 Crore and growing rapidly: more births occur in India than any other country. Yet India can be perceived as One Country, Two Worlds. While a portion of India enjoys growing affluence, some 70 percent of India's growing population live in rural villages, with little or no access to modern amenities. It is in fact estimated that 35 to 40 percent of Indians live Below Poverty Line on incomes of less than $1 per day. There is clearly urgent need to address such vast need for social and economic inclusion, as well as to promote more effective governance to efficiently serve constituent needs. The prosperity and stability of India as a whole are inextricably bound to the responsibility to promote successful growth in Rural India.
Indicators of the dimensions of rural poverty include lack of roads, lack of energy, lack of access to clean water, lack of proper sanitation facilities, lack of quality education, lack of access to healthcare, lack of gainful, employment, lack of opportunities to promote entrepreneurship, lack of gender equality, and other forms of social development.
On one hand we are witnessing technological explosions of unprecedented amalgamation with the developed world. On the other hand we witness pockets of poverty and misery in rural hinterlands which seem caught in a time warp.
